One of our favourite restaurants in Santa Marta, Ouzo was one of the first to open it’s doors in the newly renovated Parque de Los Novios in the historic centre of Santa Marta in 2011, with head chef Michael McMurdo working tirelessly to create what many consider to be one of the finest restaurants in Santa Marta. Originally from the United States, Michael cut his teeth at the award winning restaurant; The Gamekeeper in North Carolina before moving to New York city to work at the 1-Star Michelin restaurant; Anthos.
Whilst the restaurant maintains a focus on Mediterranean style food Ouzo’s menu is wide and varied, ranging from traditional wood fired pizzas to excellent fish dishes, such as their sumptuous pan seared octopus with feta cheese, plus classics like the good old Surf & Turf. There are also many excellent starters (always our favourite part of the menu) such as the braised lamb dip with feta cheese, almonds and toasted homemade pita bread (highly recommended) and the crispy yet succulent pork belly with apple vinagrette and bitter greens, as well as more adventurous creations that showcase the wider breadth of Michael’s repertoire, including his rich Lamb Gnocchi with red wine ragú and sheep’s cheese, and the extremely juicy roasted duck breast with gooseberry gastrique, baby potatos, scallions and roasted pumpkin.
Top Tip: Call and ask when Michael’s next tasting menu is being served and treat yourself to a selection of his newest creations, with some excellent wine and drink pairings to boot.
